Refinance Readiness Checklist for Australian Homeowners

Eight questions to answer before you refinance — from break costs to loan features and timing.

Homeowner preparing to refinance

Before you refinance, work through these eight questions.

  1. What is my current rate and comparison rate?
  2. Are there exit or break fees on my existing loan?
  3. How much equity do I have? (Recent comparable sales help.)
  4. What features do I use? (Offset, redraw, split.)
  5. What is my goal? Lower repayments, faster payoff, cash-out, or consolidation.
  6. How long will I keep this loan?
  7. Is my employment or income changing soon?
  8. Have I compared at least 3 lender options?
When to wait

If break costs outweigh savings, or you plan to sell soon, refinancing may not be worthwhile. A broker can quantify the break-even point.
